ReFill with Preach Sista! - Exercising Consistently
Remembering to Flourish is a call to action to live a life aware of the need to not only be intentional about finding fulfillment in our lives, but to also engage in practices that facilitate flourishing. I have identified twelve practices for flourishing. Here I will introduce the fifth practice.
Recall: (Practice) Exercising Consistently
Recharge: (devotion) I firmly believe that our physical fitness matters to God. I don’t mean being skinny. I mean being the healthiest versions of ourselves possible. When fit, our bodies can do remarkable things – run, jump, play, dance, walk, carry things, and so much more. Personally, I define being fit as moving freely and gracefully without pain or struggle. Being as active as I desire. To be available to respond to God’s wildest callings. Being disciplined. Living Health. While I love the idea of moving freely and gracefully (that’s why it is a part of my personal definition), for me the most important outcome of being fit is to be available for God’s wildest calling. To be ready for God’s wildest calling, I need to be fit. To be fit, I need to exercise consistently. Consistency takes discipline.
I Corinthians 9:26-27 tells us, “So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beathing the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” Disciplining the body helps us to remain qualified (ready) to accept God’s wildest callings. Discipling our bodies through exercise allows us to have the energy to worship with song and dance; to preach, serve, and witness; and to care for those in need and advocate for justice.
Reflect:(journal prompt) When it comes to exercise, are you more likely to make time or make excuses? What is your favorite type of exercise? What exercise would you like to try or do more of? What is preventing you from it?
Rehearse: (affirmation) My body craves exercise, and I will honor my body’s wishes.
Refill: (prayer) Faithful God, I come to you for motivation to live a healthier lifestyle. Specifically, I need help exercising consistently. I know that exercise is good for my body, but sometimes my spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak. Taking care of my body through exercise will help me to be physically ready for any task you have for me. Strengthen my will, I pray. Amen.
